BEDD Research Featured @ 2022 AIChE Annual Meeting

The 2022 AIChE Annual Meeting (including the Annual Student Conference), the premier educational forum for chemical engineers interested in innovation and professional growth, took place on November 13 through 18, 2022, in Phoenix, AZ. It was also the perfect forum for students from the Biofilm Engineering and Drug Discovery (BEDD) lab and their peers to showcase some of their research projects.

Sarees Shaikh, a MS graduate student in Chemical Engineering, presented his findings on the “Adhesion Kinetics of Staphylococcus aureus during the First Stages of Biofilm Evolution”; and
Olabisi Bello, an undergraduate student in Chemical Engineering, presented her work on the “Comparative Analysis of the Kinetics of Growth and Viability of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in Tryptic Soy Broth Versus Glucose-Based Minimal Media”.

The 2022 AIChE Annual Student Conference hosted student engineers from more than 200 schools during four days of networking – through social events, engineering competitions, and recruiting fairs. Howard University DOW SURE Fellows and chemical engineering undergraduate students, Marie-Chantal Nyirahategekimana, Ololade Oriowo, Guerodye Joseph, and Treylin Lewis also attended the conference. On Monday, November 14th, Marie-Chantal, Ololade, and Olabisi, all gave poster presentations of their research projects.

Howard University DOW SURE Fellows and chemical engineering students, **Marie-Chantal Nyirahategekimana**, **Olabisi Bello**, **Ololade Oriowo, Guerodye Joseph**, and **Treylin Lewis** at the 2022 AIChE Annual Student Conference in Phoenix, AZ.

From Dr. Preethi Chandran’s research group, Marie-Chantal introduced the audience to her poster titled “Dynamic Light Scattering Evaluation of the Effect of pH on Porcine Gastric Mucin III”.

From Dr. Solmaz Tabtabaei’s research group, Ololade presented a poster titled “Investigating the Separation Behavior of Plant Protein in Mixtures with Other Compounds Via a Tribo-Electrostatic Technique”.

The Dow Scholars Undergraduate Research (SURE) Program at Howard University (HU) is a partnership with Dow Chemical to further enhance the on-campus undergraduate research experience of students from the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) and the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS). It also provides HU DOW SURE Fellows with mentorship from industrial professionals and professional development activities. The program, directed by Dr. Patrick Ymele-Leki in CEA, aims to increase the number of Black and African American students who enroll in doctoral programs in STEM and join the workforce.
