Research and Internship Opportunities for Undergraduate Students
National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP)
The National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP) offers full-time summer internships, with opportunities to continue during the academic year.
Undergraduate and graduate students from accredited Minority Serving Institutions receive stipends and allowances to help cover commuting, travel, and housing expenses. They gain access to top-tier research and operational opportunities within the NNSA enterprise and build valuable connections with DOE scientists and experts, fostering lasting relationships with researchers and professionals at NNSA.
Opportunities are available not only in STEM but also in communication, management, business, policy, law, and other disciplines that support the NNSA Mission.
ESA-Internships, Fellowships and Scholarships
ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Fellowships
ESA has partnered with the US Geological Survey to offer summer internships to outstanding field-trained undergraduates for whom the experience would be transformative. Students may only be nominated by faculty who teach or direct field courses or field programs equivalent to 40 hours of biological field research training or other qualifying course or program.
ESA Excellence in Ecology (EEE) Scholarship
The Ecological Society of America Excellence in Ecology (EEE) Scholarship supports early – mid career ESA members who have achieved a PhD within the last 20 years. This initiative addresses one of the Recommendations from the ESA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) Task Force to support and elevate diverse scientists in our community.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) Sites: Engineering
REUs are specialized programs that offer undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in research projects under the supervision of faculty mentors. These programs are usually hosted by universities and research institutions during the summer months. They provide students with hands-on experience in their field of study and exposure to research methodologies. Furthermore, REU programs are designed to prepare students for graduate studies or careers in research and help students explore potential career paths in academia or industry.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) website hosts a directory of REU sites in engineering (see the link below)
DINO SIP at the University of Washington
The Diverse and Inclusive Naval Oceanographic Summer Internship Program (DINO SIP) at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at the University of Washington aims to provide underrepresented minority students with an opportunity to experience and conduct project-based research, participate in professional development, build community with other young scientists, and learn how to navigate the pathways to a career in maritime and oceanographic science, technology, mathematics, or engineering (STEM) fields.
Projects will be matched to the student’s level of experience. Projects can focus on marine biology, autonomous underwater vehicles, acoustics, polar science, and etc.
ZEISS Summer Internship @ NC State
This is a paid summer internship for ZEISS to a select group of qualified STEM majors in their last and second to last year. The program runs from June 17th to August 2nd. During the program interns will be trained in the basics of electron, light, and x-ray microscopy repair and troubleshooting techniques, then shadow Service Engineers in the field.
Interns are sought in the San Francisco Bay, Los Angeles, Boston, NYC, Research Triangle Park, and Baltimore-DC Metro areas. Applicants should mention in their cover letter the locations for which they want to be considered.
QISE Internship at UMD/LPS
The Department of Physics at UMD and the Laboratory for Physical Science are excited to offer the Summer Quantum Engineering Internship Program during the summer of 2024. This 8-week hands-on internship program would be a great opportunity for physics and engineering students to gain hands-on experience in quantum information science and engineering.
REU at Integrated Design in Materials in NYC (IDMinNYC)
The CREST IDEALS REU Program at The City College of New York has a focus on recruiting students from under-represented minorities and groups but encourages all students to apply. The Center has been running REU programs since 2016 but recently partnered with a REU Site at a fellow CUNY School, Lehman College. The partnership allows the Center to accept more students into a joint program, while continuing to provide a New York City based experience for undergraduates.
NASA Internship Programs
NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) paid internships allow high school and college-level students to contribute to the agency’s mission to advance science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration.
Undergraduate Summer Research Program (UGSRP) @ NYU
Each summer, members of the Tandon School of Engineering faculty open up their labs to allow NYU Tandon, NYU Dual Degree Program in Engineering (CAS/Tandon), NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and select non-NYU rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students to complete 10 weeks of hands-on research. Students work in the labs with their faculty mentors and other mentors on various research topics while also participating in seminars presented by distinguished administrative and academic personnel.
ORISE STEM Internships and Fellowships
ORISE connects the most talented and diverse college students, recent graduates, postdocs, and faculty to STEM internship and fellowship programs closely aligned with the interests of a variety of research facilities, including those managed for the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal agencies. These STEM internship and fellowship programs are key to the recruitment and preparation of the next generation of our nation’s scientific workforce.
Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF)
The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. During the 10 weeks, Fellows will receive a stipend and some students may be eligible to receive housing and travel allowance for the duration of the program.
REU program in Translational Ecology
The REU program will provide an interdisciplinary research experience at the interface of micro-/nano-technology and biomedicine to undergraduate students from other institutions. The REU Award includes $6,600 stipend, plus a $900 food allowance and free on-campus housing. Assistance is available for travel to and from the program as well.
REU on Accelerating New Environmental Workskills (REU ANEW)
Ten undergraduate students will be invited to join the faculty and graduate students to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. They will work directly with faculty research mentors, as well as Broader Impacts mentors who are working in the field to apply One Health research to real world problems. REU ANEW participants will receive a generous stipend and living expenses, including partial travel expenses and housing at the University of Maine in Orono.
REU @ University of Georgia
The REU program will provide an interdisciplinary research experience at the interface of micro-/nano-technology and biomedicine to undergraduate students from other institutions. The REU Award includes $5,000 stipend, travel allowance, and accommodation.
