Who We Are

We are a passionate group of young scientists, both undergraduate and graduate students, dedicated to investigating the captivating realm of microbes. Through our research in chemical and biochemical engineering, we unravel the biological and physiological mysteries that these tiny organisms hold. Our mission is to uncover the profound impact of microbes on our environment and society, pioneering innovative solutions inspired by their natural processes. Together, we aim to advance scientific understanding and contribute to discoveries that benefit society.

Where We Are

Located at Howard University in Washington, D.C., we thrive within an institution where history and innovation converge to offer a unique educational experience. As a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Howard University stands as a beacon of diversity, creativity, and academic excellence. From groundbreaking research that shapes industries to a legacy of social justice advocacy, Howard embodies a commitment to empowerment and community. Join us in embracing this vibrant campus where the past inspires the future, and where challenges spark innovative discoveries!

What We Do

In our engineering laboratory, we unravel the microbial mysteries of biofilms – those complex bacterial communities that resemble tiny cities on surfaces. Imagine us as detectives armed with state-of-the-art microscopes and analytical tools. We investigate how biofilm architecture influences their resistance to treatments like antibiotics. Like architects, we redesign biofilms and devise strategies to penetrate their defenses, transforming bacteria into controllable, beneficial agents. It’s a battle of wits against nature’s best builders, where innovation and determination drive our quest for solutions.

How We Do It

We employ cutting-edge methodologies from chemical and biochemical engineering to dissect biofilm structures and mechanisms. Our approach combines advanced microscopy and sophisticated analytical techniques, allowing us to explore the intricate world of microbial communities at a molecular level. By understanding these processes, we aim to gain novel insights and develop innovative strategies to combat biofilm-related challenges effectively.

Why It Matters

Our research is important because biofilms play a significant role in various industries and medical settings, often causing persistent infections and contamination issues. By understanding biofilm behaviors and developing targeted interventions, we aim to mitigate their impact on human health, environmental sustainability, and industrial operations. Through our work, we strive to advance scientific knowledge and contribute practical solutions that enhance societal well-being and technological innovation.
